As an architect my work sometimes took me to some unusual parts of Australia.
In 2009, I drove a rental car along the NW Coastal highway in the Pilbara region of Western Australia from Karratha to Port Hedland, having projects in both towns. I lived and worked in this part of Australia in an iron ore mine when I was 21 years old (over 30 years earlier) and it was then that I discovered the striking beauty of Sturt’s Desert Pea.
On this trip I took a couple of detours to reminisce. I was driving along an unsealed road out the back of Wickham along the railway line when I found myself braking heavily as one part of my mind informed the other part of my mind of the Desert Pea growing by the roadside. Eureka! Artwork #160, Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa).
Treetop Crescent, Karratha
