Botanical Information:
Family: MyrtaceaeGenus: Eucalyptus
Species: erythrocorys
Meaning of name:
Eucalyptus is from Greek: eu, well + calyptos, covered. A reference to the well-covered cap covering the developing flowers
erythrocorys is from Greek: erythros, red + korys, helmet. A reference to the bright red bud cap covering the flowers
Eucalyptus erythrocorys, or the red-capped gum, grows anywhere from 3m to 10m (10 to 33 feet) tall. It is known for its bright red rectangular cap (called an operculum) on the flower bud, which falls to the ground as the bright yellow flowers emerge. These flowers are up to 7cm (3 inches) across and appear from late summer to early autumn. The flowers are followed by large helmet shaped fruits, and so many are produced that the tree is weighed down.
