In late November 2011 we drove south to Mallacoota in Victoria — just over the border from NSW. Offshore from Mallacoota is Gabo Island and its ancient lighthouse — which we were very fortunate to visit as I was commissioned by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to design a paper model kit of the lighthouse to celebrate the granite sentinel’s 150th anniversary.
When walking along the main street (Maurice Street — my namesake) of Mallacoota I found an attractive gum tree in blossom (Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. petiolaris) and hence botanical flower art #229.
I particularly like the hole in the leaf, an inherent and desired natural imperfection called Shibui in Japanese art and culture. Thank you leaf grub for your artistic contribution.
The photo above is an aerial view of Gabo Island with its historic lighthouse. The black specks on the rock (bottom centre of photo) are big seals. The white is err…guano.
