Botanical Information:
Family: ProteaceaeGenus: Banskia
Species: ashbyi
Meaning of name:
Banksia, after Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820), an English naturalist and botanist who accompanied (then) Lieutenant James Cook on the Endeavour in 1768–1771, and who did much to bring Australian botany to the European world
ashbyi, after Eric Asby who collected the type form
Banksia ashbyi is the most northern Banksia in Western Australia. There are two subspecies:
- B. ashbyi subsp. boreoscaia from the north grows as a sprawling 2m (6.5 feet) high shrub, and is resistant to fire as it has a lignotuber
- B. ashbyi subsp. ashbyi from the south grows to an 8m (26 feet) tree and lacks a lignotuber, making it susceptible to fire
This print features in the Banksia Flower Collection 1 triptych collection, the Banksia Flower Collection 2 diptych collection, and the Banksia Flower Collection 4 diptych collection.
